چکیده

Multianvil melting experiments in the system CaO–MgO–Al2O3– SiO2–CO2 (CMAS–CO2) at 3–8 GPa, 1340–1800 C, involving the garnet lherzolite phase assemblage in equilibrium with CO2-bearing melts, yield continuous gradations in melt composition between carbonatite, kimberlite, melilitite, komatiite, picrite, and basalt melts. The phase relations encompass a divariant surface in P–T space. Comparison of the carbonatitic melts produced at the low-temperature side of this surface with naturally occurring carbonatites indicates that natural magnesiocarbonatites could be generated over a wide range of pressures >2 5GPa. Melts analogous to kimberlites form at higher temperatures along the divariant surface, which suggests that kimberlite genesis requires more elevated geotherms. However, the amount of water found in some kimberlites has the potential to lower temperatures for the generation of kimberlitic melts by up to 150 C, provided no hydrous phases are present. Compositions resembling group IB and IA kimberlites are produced at pressures around 5–6 GPa and 10GPa, respectively, whereas the compositions of some other kimberlites suggest generation at higher pressures still. At pressures <4GPa, an elevated geotherm produces melilitite-like melt in the CMAS–CO2 system rather than kimberlite. Even when a relatively CO2-rich mantle composition containing 0 15 wt % CO2 is assumed, kimberlites and melilitites are produced by <1% melting and carbonatites are generated by even smaller degrees of melting of <0 5%.

Preferential Assimilation Due to Melt-rock Reaction in the Lunar Mantle: a Laboratory and Ophiolite Field

Introduction: Assimilation has been called upon in numerous occasions to explain various petrologic and geochemical observations of the igneous rocks on the Moon. A well known example is the assimilation of ilmenite-bearing late cumulates (and KREEP) to the low Ti primary magmas at shallow levels, that has been used to explain the high Ti magmas observed on the lunar surface [1]-[3]. An alterna...

Toward Developing a Garnet Lherzolite Saturation Model for Lunar Low-ti, Ultramafic Green Glass Compositions

Introduction: The petrogenesis of the low-Ti lunar ultramafic glasses is critical to the understanding of volcanic processes on the Moon. Popular petrologic models developed to explain the formation of these glasses involve high pressure melting of a variety of sources, including primordial, garnet bearing, lunar mantle and depleted lunar magma ocean (LMO) cumu-lates [1,2,3,4]. Following the hi...

Melt/harzburgite reaction in the petrogenesis of tholeiitic magma from Kilauea volcano, Hawaii

We use the results of elevated pressure melting experiments to constrain the role of melt/mantle reaction in the formation of tholeiitic magma from Kilauea volcano, Hawaii. Trace element abundance data is commonly interpreted as evidence that Kilauea tholeiite is produced by partial melting of garnet lherzolite. We experimentally determine the liquidus relations of a tightly constrained estimat...

Experimental and geochemical studies of terrestrial and lunar magmatic processes

Experimental and geochemical studies were performed to understand the formation of certain terrestrial and lunar igneous rocks. Chapter one is a study of convergent margin magmatism at Medicine Lake Volcano, California. The petrogenesis of a suite of variably porphyritic, high-alumina lavas was inferred from field relations, hydrous melting experiments and geochemical modeling. I conclude that ...

The Roles of Lherzolite and Garnet Pyroxenite

Textural, major element and trace element data for xeno-liths from Salt Lake Crater, Hawaii indicate that typical four phase lherzolite inclusions (olivine, orthopyroxene, chrome diopside and spinel) found worldwide in basalts are not samples of primitive upper mantle. Rather, lherzolite may be the recrystallized residue left after a basaltic melt extracts the easily fused components from pre-e...
